Cardinal Newman and the Encyclical

by Most Rev. Edward Thomas O’Dwyer

This essay was written by Bishop Edward Thomas O’Dwyer (1842-1917), the Bishop of Limerick, Ireland for 30 years. He wrote it in response to the efforts of the Modernists to count the celebrated British convert Cardinal John Henry Newman amongst them. The essay was approved and recommended by Pope St. Pius X, and this edition contains his personal letter of thanks to Bishop O’Dwyer. Also included is Cardinal Newman’s speech on the occasion of his elevation to the college of Cardinals in 1879, where he in clear words confirmed his lifelong opposition to religious Liberalism. Finally, this edition contains Cardinal Henry Edward Manning’s eulogy at the funeral of Newman in 1890.
